John's was born to Quaker parents, Thomas and Ruth (Hadley) Lindley. His parents' land was the site of The Battle of Lindley's Mill fought during the Revolutionary War.
John's grandparents were James Lindley and Eleanor (Parke) Lindley; Simon Hadley and Ruth (Miller) Kerran Hadley.
John's parents and grandparents were Irish immigrants.
John married Sarah Pyle 16 March 1768. She was the daughter of Col. John Pyle, M.D. and his wife, Sarah (Baldwin) Pyle.
On 5 Nov 1768 he was disowned by Quakers at the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting House. It is assumed he was disowned because he had married outside his faith when he married Sarah earlier in the year.
1779 SC Census shows John and family living in 96th District in South Carolina.
1782, John, a British sympathizer was arrestied in Chatham Co. NC. and lost all his property. He moved his family for a short time to New Castle, Delaware where Sarah had family.
At age 42, John wrote his will on 9 Sept 1790. His will was proven 11 Nov 1790.
